Day Trip From Perth, Western Australia

Perth is a beautiful city to visit and is also a great central location for discovering some amazing places around that area of Western Australia’s stunning coastline. We took a day trip north of Perth and found it to be a great adventure with the kids in tow. This is what we did that day!
First stop in the morning was Watermans Bay Beach for a quick swim.
Watermans Bay is a 25 minute drive from the centre of Perth. A beautiful little beach with bathrooms available and a cafe across the road. Great for morning swims but can get rather windy in the afternoons.
Now for a bit of a drive, we headed north to visit The Pinnacles.
The Pinnacles are located in the Nambung National Park, 2 hours and 45 minutes north of Watermans Bay. Entry into the Nambung National Park and Pinnacles Dessert is $12 per car and includes entry into the small (but air-conditioned!) discovery centre. Bathrooms and a small shop are also available. There is a short drive through The Pinnacles Dessert with lots of little spots to pull over so you can get out and explore. You will be driving on sand but it is safe for 2 wheel drive cars as it is fairly flat and solid. For you own safety and preservation, don’t climb on the Pinnacles. If you feel like a climb then there are plenty of sand hills that will give you a great view. Although The Pinnacles are not far from the coastline, it is very hot there in the Summer, so make sure you have water and sun cream with you. It was around 40 degrees Celsius when we visited.
Next stop, Cervantes for a spot of lunch.
Eating local produce is one of my most favourite things to do so it was only right to try locally caught rock lobster while visiting Cervantes, which is only a 15 minute drive north of The Pinnacles. We ate at the Lobster Shack, Catalonia Street, Cervantes. Lobster Shack is definitely set up as a tourist stop and the prices reflect this, however, the lobster was delicious. They also offer tours and take away frozen seafood.
Making our way south but not before a cool down!
Wedge Island Beach is 30 minutes south of Cervantes. The sand is so white and the water is amazingly clear! At the end of Wedge Island Road you’ll come across a village of lease hold shacks and the start of the 4WD track that takes you onto the beach. We didn’t have a 4WD so we parked there and walked through the shack village, over the small sand dune and onto the beach. When we got over the dune we found a little piece of paradise! It was very quiet, almost like we had the place to ourselves. There were a few 4WDs further down the beach so we made sure we didn’t leave our beach bag on their tracks! Making sure we stayed in shallow water, we swam for a good hour or more. We highly recommend a stop here as there aren’t too many places in the world with sand as white and water as clear!
Time to head a little further south for some action!
Sand board action that is! 35 minutes further south is the town of Lancelin which is known for its windy bay and huge sand dunes. You can hire a sand board from the general store or surf shop on the main road in the town. It cost us $10 for board hire and a $50 cash deposit. You can drive right up to the sand dunes with parking spaces for 2WD and 4WD cars. Be sure to have plenty of sun cream on as well as a hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes from the windblown sand. After we got all hot and sweaty from sand boarding we decided a quick dip would cool us all down. Lancelin beach was great for a quick dip and it also had a shower and toilets to get the kids washed and dressed in their pyjamas ready for the drive home. We ate dinner at one of the local takeaway shops before we headed back towards Perth.
Two Rocks, the perfect spot to watch the sunset.
We stopped in at Two Rocks to watch the sun go down over the ocean. Two Rocks is around a 50 minute drive south from Lancelin. There is a small playground and bathrooms available right near the lookout in case the kids have a little energy left or need a loo break before driving off again. We sat for around 20 minutes watching the sun go down before heading back towards Perth. As the kids were already in their pyjamas we just tucked them into the car and they fell asleep for the last part of the trip.
We really had such a fabulous day and couldn’t have asked for better weather! It was hot but the dry heat is much easier to handle than the humid heat we get in Sydney.
