Spiderweb Cupcakes by The World And Kids

Cupcakes are always a favourite in our house. Every party will feature a cupcake or few! This time we decided to make some spooky spiderweb cupcakes to go with our Halloween theme for the month. We also wanted an excuse to make spun sugar because it’s so much fun!!

So here are our Spiderweb Cupcakes that look just like a web in the morning dew.

  2. 2 eggs for cupcake mix

  3. 3 tablespoons of softened butter for cupcake mix

  4. 1/2 cup milk for cupcake mix

  5. 3 tablespoons of softened butter for icing mix

  10. Red writing icing for spiders

Spiderweb Cupcakes Ingridients

Method

  1. Heat oven to 180 degrees Celsius

  2. Line 12 hole cupcake tray with patty pans

  3. Mix cupcake mix, eggs, butter and milk in a mixer until well combined.

  4. Divide between patty pans

  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes

  6. Lay 1m of baking paper on a bench. *Tip – wipe the bench with a damp cloth before laying out the baking paper. The wet will help the baking paper to stay in place.

  7. Prepare a set of forks back to back to spin the sugar. *Tip – use a rubber band to secure the forks together.

  8. Beware – Sugar is VERY hot. Combine caster sugar, glucose and water in a saucepan over a medium heat

  9. Continue to stir for 5-6 minutes or until the sugar turns light brown

  10. Place the saucepan in an iced water bath to stop the cooking process

  11. Dip the forks in the sugar and then flick the sugar over the baking paper at a fast pace

Spun Sugar
  1. Once you have a good pile of spun sugar, carefully make 12 nests ready for the top of the cupcakes

Spun sugar nests

  2. Ice the cupcakes once they are cool

  3. Place the spun sugar nests on top of the cupcakes

  4. Melt the chocolate buds in the microwave for 1 minute

  5. Place melted chocolate in a ziplock bag and snip a small hole in the bottom corner

Melted chocolate for piping
  1. Pipe chocolate spiders onto baking paper and allow to cool

Chocolate Spiders
  1. Use a small amount of icing to stick the spiders to the web

  2. Pipe a red line on the back of the spiders using the writing icing
